Chany's Grand Canyon Trip 2004

My Trip To the Grand Canyon
2004 September 3: Hike down on South Kaibab Trail to accomodations at Phantom Ranch
2004 September 4: Explore Bright Angel Gorge
2004 September 5: Hike out on Bright Angel Trail

Carved by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon unfolds below the South Rim in a breathtaking maze of buttes and cliffs. Our adventure began with a descent on the South Kaibab Trail, plunging into a silent world of ancient rock. The trail winds through layers of time, a rugged descent into the Inner Gorge. Here, the thunderous Colorado river comes into view, its power the very reason for this vast chasm.

At the bottom, nestled beside Bright Angel Creek, lies Phantom Ranch. This historic oasis of rustic cabins and shade is a welcome respite after the long hike. The cool water is a sharp contrast to the sun-scorched cliffs above. Staying overnight offers a profound experience, as the canyon walls open to a sliver of starry sky. However, the journey is only half complete.

The return hike to the Rim is a grueling 4,500-foot ascent on the Bright Angel Trail, a powerful reminder of the scale and grandeur of this natural wonder.

Here are nice scenic pictures of me and the Grand Canyon.

Much of the South Kaibab Trail follows the side of a ridge down to the Colorado River below. This results in a hike with a lot of great views of the Grand Canyon. However, being exposed with little shade, it can get very hot.

Besides deer, the park rangers introduced us to scorpions that live in the Canyon.

Bright Angel Creek Gorge

For our day in the Canyon, we went for a hike in the Bright Angel Creek Gorge.

We were informed that the Bright Angel Creek Gorge is susceptible to flash floods, so if you hear what sounds like a freight train approaching, get to higher ground!

Hiking Out - Start of Switchbacks
Hiking Out - Switchbacks Out Of Gorge

For our departure out of the Grand Canyon, we took the Bright Angel Trail. This trail follows a creek up to the top. This was the preferred route as it offers more shade for the ascent. We started hiking out at sunrise.

There were switchbacks as we went up the side of the gorge.

Hiking Out - Taking A Break

It was going to be 10 hours to hike out of the Canyon. Here the gang is taking a break on the trail.

Hiking Out - In Sunshine

Much of the hike in the bottom portion of the trail was in a gorge and thus in the shade. Once we got to the upper portion of the Bright Angel Trail, we were in the sunshine.
